Deputy Defence Minister Majer: “The life of General M. R. Štefánik has remained a permanent source of inspiration for us, his successes have crossed the borders of our homeland”

Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer, Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko, and Secretary General of the SVK MOD's Service Office Peter Kozák attended a ceremony marking the 142nd birthday anniversary of General M. R. Štefánik, who is widely recognised as one of the most prominent personalities of Slovak history.

Speaking at the ceremony in Štefánik's native village of Košariská, Marian Majer said: “Even 142 years on from his birthday, it is indisputable that the life of this politician, scientist, diplomat, general and spiritually rich person has remained a permanent source of inspiration for us. Štefánikʼs successes, which have crossed the borders of our homeland, are a valuable legacy not only for the Slovak people, but also for other nations in Europe and worldwide.”

According to him, General Štefánik's legacy reminds us of how important it is that we must not let up in the struggle for universal values of a free and democratic world. “Even though just a few month ago we believed a modern and developed Europe could not become a battlefield, today we are witnessing Russiaʼs unprecedented aggressive behaviour, which is inhumane and in stark contrast to international law,” he added.

Milan Rastislav Štefánik was born on 21 July 1880 in Košariská. His life was extinguished prematurely in a plane crash close to the village of Ivanka pri Dunaji on Sunday 4 May 1919.
